Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. A pair of hollow pottery rattles in the shape of abstract people, lying on pallets or litter for carrying. This type of figure might represent a deceased person being laid out to prepare for burial. The full extent of Chancay burial practices is not known, but perhaps using rattles such as these or including them in burial were part of the funerary ritual. Provenance: private Manhattan Beach, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004

  • Condition: Chips and losses to some protruding tabs along the periphery of the litter. Surface abrasions and chips to figures. No discernable repairs or restoration. The smaller rattle makes noise, but is probably missing most of the balls inside, and larger rattle functions.
