Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) to Chancay culture, ca. 500 to 1470 CE. A pair of effigy figures in human form: one larger, mold-made from pottery, and the other carved from wood. The hollow pottery figure also serves as a rattle, featuring pierced holes in the shoulders, possibly for suspension or carrying. Its surface is painted, with well-preserved remnants of white, black, and red pigments. The figure wears a pointed cap modeled after known woven examples from the Huari era, likely signifying rank. The wooden funerary figure depicts a standing man with simplified features, his arms resting on his chest. It may have once been clothed in textiles and placed among other burial offerings. Size of pottery figure: 4" L x 2" W x 11" H (10.2 cm x 5.1 cm x 27.9 cm); wood: 6.6" L x 2.5" W (16.8 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Manhattan Beach, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004
