West Africa, Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Baule culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A pair of carved wooden slingshot handles known as potomo waka. One features a zoomorphic head atop anthropomorphic masks, while the other is adorned with geometric motifs. Slings were traditionally used for hunting small game, and the carved faces were not merely decorative; they were believed to represent spirits or ancestors who aided the hunter and provided protection. Size of face sling: 6.8" L x 2.75" W (17.3 cm x 7 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on included custom stand.
