Description:

Central Asia, India, Uttar Pradesh, Mathura, Kushan Period, ca. late 1st to 3rd century CE. A sensual high-relief sandstone carving depicting the lower waist of a standing male figure or deity, gracefully posed with a slight curve at the hips. The lower abdomen and upper thighs are draped with a thin dhoti, secured by a knotted sash over the right thigh, with cloth draped over the remaining hand resting on the left hip and prominent genitalia visible. The drapery is rendered with striking naturalism, and notably, the verso is also carved, indicating that the piece was either freestanding or intended for full-view display, though it may have been set into a temple niche. Size: 6.5" L x 4" W x 7" H (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm x 17.8 cm); 10.45" H (26.5 cm) on included custom stand.
