Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 20th century CE. A brass phurba (also known as a magic dagger), a ceremonial implement in Vajrayana Buddhism. The handle is shaped like a vajra (or dorje), featuring a pair of openwork ribs, and it transitions into a makara head, from whose mouth emerge snakes along with the three-sided, stake blade. The pommel end is cast with three outward-facing Ganesha heads, the elephant-headed deity, topped by a deer or Hayagriva head. The form of the phurba originates from an ancient Vedic tool used to pin down sacrifices. The three segments of the blade symbolize the phurba's power to transform the "three poisons" of negative energy - attachment, aversion, and ignorance. Additionally, they represent the three spirit worlds, which the phurba is believed to unite. Tibetan script is inscribed on the verso of the blade, likely a mantra or other incantation. Size: 12.5" L x 2.75" W (31.8 cm x 7 cm); 13" H (33 cm) on included custom stand.
