Description:

Northern/Central Europe, Celtic culture, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A forged-iron short sword exhibiting a fantastic level of preservation with a broad handle and a ring-shaped pommel. The double-edged blade features a shallow midrib along both faces as well as a pointed tip, and the slender rectangular guard creates a buffer between the blade shoulder and the fighter's hand. Swords of this type were perhaps not used for battle but as utilitarian tools for farming, butchery, pelt-making, and shaping of wood or mud bricks. However, it could certainly double as a battle-ready weapon should the occasion arise. Size: 1.875" W x 20.5" H (4.8 cm x 52.1 cm); (blade): 15.6" L (39.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
