Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A carved wooden portrait mask with interesting features. The face has a huge headdress or coiffure - probably meant to be a wig - with deeply incised lines forming a dramatic bulge that towers over the long face. Bulbous jowls hang down over a small chin, while the thin nose broadens abruptly into wide line at the nostrils. The eyes are large, carved with heavy outlines. Size: 3.75" W x 8.5" H (9.5 cm x 21.6 cm); 9.75" H (24.8 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Inactive insect damage, especially on the undecorated back of the piece. One fragment of headdress remains. Very old collection sticker on back. Wooden cracks as shown. Nice remaining detail and features are very clear.
