Description:

West Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule or possibly Yoruba, ca. early 20th century CE. A diminutive and charming staff capped by the stylized, carved head of an elephant. Huge round, concave ears dominate the sides, while the elephant's small round eyes, curved trunk, and two nub-like horns give the impression of it being a juvenile. Size: 12.5" H (31.8 cm); 13.45" H (34.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: the late Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired before 1970
