Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A fine marine mammal bone smoking pipe carved into a seated human figure with a zoomorphic head between his legs. The top of the man's head forms the receptacle bowl lined in copper, blackened from use, and the verso has a drilled inhalation hole just above a nacre inlay. The man crouches which his hands under his chin and the perked eared head- perhaps a wolf or fox- is carved between his knees- the eyes of both man and animal are inlaid with nacre. The man might represent a shaman with his animal totem or spirit helper since the ceremonial smoking of tobacco would carry the prayers into celestial realms with the aid of these guiding spirits.
