Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A fine example of a hand-carved wood and bone halibut hook, a bone bead, and bone pin- the bone all originating from a marine mammal such as whale or walrus. The hook has a curved form, with the bone barb securely fastened to the wood tip with a sinew cord, to point directly upward. This hook style was designed to capture the correct size of halibut, who feed by opening their mouths wide. If the fish was too small, it would not be able to hook itself; if the fish was too large (and might capsize a small boat), it would put the entire hook in its mouth and not be barbed. The bead is an elongated tubular shape, the center tapering slightly to the drilled openings at both ends. The third simple implement retains the natural metaphysis protrusion, and the other end is sharpened to function as a pin for securing hair or clothing in place. Size (hook): 5.5" L x 1.5" W (14 cm x 3.8 cm)
