Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A ornate cast copper cylindrical vessel with brass appliques and etched motifs, the lid is connected to the body via a chain, and interestingly, the lid comes off from a secondary tray that rests within the lip of the main compartment. The raised brass appliques are cast into the 8 auspicious Buddhist symbols: the parasol represents shading and protection granted by Buddha, the fish his ability to swim through oceans of suffering without drowning, the conch is Buddha's voice, the victory banner guides all to enlightenment, the knot of eternity is Buddha's heart, the lotus floats above the muddy waters of desire, the treasure vase is health and prosperity, and the dharma wheel. Such elaborate vessels held ritualistic items or sacred texts and make for beautiful and unique display pieces.. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 8.75" H (8.9 cm x 22.2 cm)
