Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A pretty sheet bronze ghau (gau, ghau), a Tibetan prayer box. The shape of the box mirrors that of traditional central Asian roofs inspired by the domes and arches of Persian architecture. The face of the box has an intricate and auspicious cast motif that has been kept polished, while the other sides are undecorated aside from two looped, riveted handles that project from either side. Buddhists all over the world use prayer boxes like this one, designed to conceal a hidden space in which the owner may place sacred mantras, pictures of the Buddha or other deities, sacred relics, or herbs. Many are worn on a cord around the neck and are smaller than this early example. Size: 5.3" W x 4.7" H (13.5 cm x 11.9 cm)
