Southeast Asia, Thailand, 19th century CE. A dusty red sandstone frieze showing a quintet of elephants in profile, each with trunks lifted, holding up balls of something that looks like vines or possibly celebratory pom poms. The elephants are festooned with decorative tassels and stand with front legs bent, leaning back onto their hind legs, as if about to rise up. This may once have been an architectural element of a temple, palace, or wealthy residence. The elephant has long symbolism in Thailand, often associated with royalty and even gracing their money, flags, and provincial seals at various times.
