Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma/Myanmar, ca. 19th century CE. A tall carved wood statue, painted with red details and gilded, with painted facial features and incredibly ornate carved clothing. The figure has a tall, curved hat and stands with arms extended, palms facing upwards, in a welcoming stance. The pose is naturalistic, with bent legs revealed underneath the robes. Small holes through the ears suggest that the figure once had gold jewelry. The figure stands atop a round, dark red base. This is a depiction of a nat, a spirit worshiped in Burma alongside Buddhism. These figures are mountain and forest guardians, or village guardians, and each village has a unique one; they are said to be humans who met violent deaths, and they have human wants and needs. This means that they are flawed figures, often with taboo desires, in opposition to the worship of the Buddha. A very beautiful figure with an expressive face. Size: 6.2" W x 23.8" H (15.7 cm x 60.5 cm)
