Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely Buddha gilt-brass statue cast over a pottery core, resting on a tall dais pedestal sitting upright in lotus position, his hands forming the Bhumisparsha mudra, the "earth witness" gesture, one of the most iconic poses of Buddhism. Seated before him are 5 seated figures mirroring his posture, and along each tier of the pedestal below are figures in low relief, representing Buddha's numerous emanations. The base tier contains Thailand's 12 zodiac animals- rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, naga, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Such a statue may have been set in shrine or temple as an offering and is in beautiful antique condition with age related wear to the surface.
