Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma / Myanmar, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A graceful brass standing figure of a bodhisattva shown standing barefoot on an integral plinth with left hand in the varada mudra of gift-giving and right hand at chest height displaying the vitarka mudra of intellectual discussion and transmission of Buddha's teachings. His hair is drawn up in a tall coiffure known as a jatamukuta, which signifies the crown of an ascetic, and elaborately dressed in twisted cords falling in loops around and flanking a central seated image of Amitabha Buddha. Bare-chested, a knotted sash secures his long dhoti to his hips as a floral necklace falls across his clavicle, while he grasps a petite object - perhaps a lotus bud - in his left hand. His plinth is stamped with an indistinguishable maker's mark. Size: 5" W x 17.7" H (12.7 cm x 45 cm)
