Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden standing Buddha with a posture and mudra representing "Calming the Ocean" or "Repelling the Ocean" - a pose that originated from a story that took place when the Buddha visited Bihar state in India. According to this story, a hermit intended to cause a flood and unleashed a rush of waters; however, the Buddha employed the powers of meditation to halt the wall of waters from flooding the region. This Buddha is finely carved with characteristic traits such as his long , stretched earlobes, resulting from the elaborate display of jewelry that Prince Gautama once wore prior to becoming an ascetic and renouncing such materialistic luxuries, and his meticulously curled and gilded hair topped by an ushnisha, a protuberance that symbolized the spiritual power and enlightenment of the Buddha. Additional gilding highlights the trim of his garments. A lovely Buddha, replete with resplendant artistry, strong technique, and richly symbolic religious iconography. Block stand. Size: 14.25" H (36.2 cm)
