Southeast Asia, Thailand, 19th century CE. This is a bust in bronze of Buddha Gautama Sakyamuni, the Buddha of compasison who, having achieved the highest level of enlightenment, is here portrayed as a youthful prince with a contemplative expression, rounded dimpled chin, and pronounced eyes. His mouth has full lips recessed at the corners. He wears his hair in large curls characteristic of the Thai style. He is crowned with an ushnisha, the large bump symbolic of his enlightenment and divine wisdom. Size: 16.5" L x 7" W x 5" H (41.9 cm x 17.8 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey collection, acquired at auction.
