Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, South Sulawesi, Toraja, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coffin end panel from a buried coffin in the form of a stylized Aso, a protective zoomorphic guardian figure with thick legs, a conical snout, and a pair of light-blue glass bead eyes. The figure stands atop an integral rectangular platform, and the head bears a pair of short, curling horns. Size: 13.75" L x 14.8" W x 6.625" H (34.9 cm x 37.6 cm x 16.8 cm).
