Description:

Western Europe, Spain, ca. early 19th century CE. A lovely example of a sword known as an espada ancha (literally "wide sword") of an elegant form. The forged-steel, double-edged blade exhibits a lengthy profile with a pointed tip and a pair of shallow fullers on either side. The blade shoulder is topped with an upturned thumb rest and a sweeping hand guard, and the wooden handle is reinforced with 4 riveted vertical steel panels. Accompanying the espada ancha is a leather sheath with a brass-lined belt loop on the top flange and a curved profile, perhaps for a different sword. Size (in sheath): 4" W x 31.8" H (10.2 cm x 80.8 cm); (full sword): 28.3" L x 3.625" W (71.9 cm x 9.2 cm); (blade): 24.1" L x 1.5" W (61.2 cm x 3.8 cm)
