Description:

Eastern Europe, Greece, Athens, Greek Orthodox, ca. 1920s CE. A lovely ensemble of 2 silver tamata (singular: tama) - votive offerings or ex-votos used in the Eastern Orthodox Churches, especially the Greek Orthodox Church. Each of octagonal form with a petite drill hole at the top for suspension, the first and larger tama displays the relief of a standing man and woman. The woman wears a knee-length, A-line dress and heels, as the male wears a suit and carries a candle, as though giving an offering. The number "925" is stamped twice between the 2 figures to indicate the silver quality. Alternatively, the other tama presents the relief of a soldier, depicted standing and dressed in a helmet and full uniform. The numbers "81" and "26" flank his head. Size of largest: 2.7" W x 4.1" H (6.9 cm x 10.4 cm); (modern case): 6.7" W x 8.7" H (17 cm x 22.1 cm); silver quality: male and female: 94.46%, soldier: 84.49%; total weight: 14.2 grams

Tamata like these are traditionally offered to an icon or shrine of a saint as a reminder of a petitioner's particular need or in gratitude for a prayer answered.
