Description:

New World, Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden santo depicting a Franciscan saint, probably St. Anthony of Padua or possibly St. Francis of Assisi. He wears the traditional dark brown robes of that order, and possesses the distinctive tonsure of Franciscan monks. His hands are extended and would have once held implements. If St. Anthony, he probably once held a book and the infant Jesus, based on a commonly told story of him reading a book and seeing the Christ Child's image in it. Gilt pigment colors the ends of his robe and his belt. Size: 3.1" W x 9.5" H (7.9 cm x 24.1 cm)

Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved and often furnished with crowns, jewels, and other accessories, usually funded by religious devotees, and were used as icons to explain the major figures - Mary, Christ, and the saints - to new, indigenous converts. Likewise, they served as a connection to the Old World for Spanish colonists far from home. They became a folk art tradition in the Spanish New World, from modern day Guatemala to as far north as New Mexico and Colorado. Many of them were lovingly cared for over the years, with repairs and paint added as they aged, and played an active part for a long time in the religious life of their communities.

  • Condition: One arm is lost; the other hand is lost from the fingertips onward. The piece would have once had an integrated stand which is lost, as well as a halo, which is also lost, which is why it has openings and a peg on the top and bottom. Wear on surface commensurate with age, including chips, nicks, and scratches, and some losses to the pigment. Great patina.
