Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a recumbent feline with all four legs tucked beneath its body and a sinuous tail curled around one hind leg. The triangular head projects from the stocky neck and features gently arched eyebrows above yellow-painted eyes, rounded jowls, a pair of perky ears decorated in red pigment, and a tapered snout that houses the end of a serrated iron grating tool. Size: 19.625" L x 5.125" W x 9.6" H (49.8 cm x 13 cm x 24.4 cm)

  • Condition: Losses to areas of posterior, base, and legs as shown. Several stable abrasions to body and base, with fading to original pigmentation, and encrustations on iron grating tool. Good traces of original pigment on head and neck, and great patina throughout.
