A personal cast-brass icon depicting the "Harrowing of Hell," Christ's triumphant descent into Hell between the Crucifixion and Resurrection, when he brought salvation to all of the righteous dead. In this depiction, Christ stands in the center, arms spread, wearing long robes; the terrestrial world forms the upper border, while below are the dead reaching towards Him, and above is a depiction of God the Father. An upper border in Cyrillic describes the scene. This icon and others like it were used by traveling priests to tell the story of Christ. Beautiful traces of dark-blue and white enamel inlays are visible across the obverse side. Size: 3.125" W x 4.75" H (7.9 cm x 12.1 cm).
