Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely cast-brass, three-bar cross with the crucified Christ, the short topmost bar representing the sign reading, "This is the King of the Jews" from Luke 23:38 that was nailed to the top of Christ's cross. Twin cherubs fly downward towards Christ, and above them is a minute depiction of God the Father. Beneath Christ is an image of Adam's skull in the cave to remind us that Adam lost Paradise through forbidden knowledge, and that Christ will return us to it. Faint traces of blue enamel are visible across the obverse side, and the verso is recessed and unadorned. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 3.5" W x 6.125" H (8.9 cm x 15.6 cm).
