Description:

Native American, Plains, ca. late 19th century CE. A skillfully hand-made deer hide quiver of an overall cylindrical form stitched along its length, and with a hide cord handle and intriguing hand-painted iconography. Upon close inspection, the outer walls are adorned with several stylized black arrows flanking a stylized human figure who crouches above a stepped motif! Size: 16" L x 3.75" in diameter (40.6 cm x 9.5 cm)

Arrows were incredibly important to Native Americans, as the bow and arrow enabled Native Americans to hunt animals that provided for their food, weapons, clothing, and tools. Given this, arrows were used to adorn various objects, including quivers like this example. They symbolized protection, defense, movement, direction, force, and power.
