South America, Peru, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful ceramic bull or torito (little bull in Spanish), designed to stand upon a rooftop as if perched upon a hilltop and overlooking the pastures below. Such bulls were created to bring about good fortune and protection for the families residing in the home. They are also known as Pucara for the place where such bulls were first made, and derive from the Inca votives known as Illas (also canopas)- stone or ceramic llamas or alpacas created with a depression in their bodies to insert alpaca fat and then bury in the earth to bring about a good harvest. Size: 9.875" L x 7.75" H (25.1 cm x 19.7 cm)
