Description:

Western Asia, Persia or Iran, Qajar Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A beautifully glazed ceramic tile of a rectangular form, featuring a man on horseback with a large bird overhead. The scene is molded in bas relief and protrudes slightly above the white ground. The man and animals are painted with vibrant hues of blue, green, yellow, and brown with black details. The man extends his hand up to the bird, which may represent Huma, a mythological creature. The shadow of Huma fell upon people of royal status, which suggests that this tile depicts a princely figure riding below! Such tiles were used as decorative architectural elements. A lovely example of fine Qajar artistry! Size: 8.5" L x 6.25" W (21.6 cm x 15.9 cm)
