Description:

Western Asia, Persia or Iran, Qajar Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A circular tile with a charming glazed scene of a deer leaping through flowering foliage. The image is painted in hues of green, yellow, blue, purple, brown, and black on a white ground. Oversized flowers fan out behind the deer, as the animal looks backward. Such tiles were popular decorative elements in architecture during the Qajar dynasty, and many images were revivals of earlier Achaemenid and Sasanian themes. The colors and scene are nicely preserved on this large tile! Size: 9" Diameter x .5" W (22.9 cm x 1.3 cm)
