Description:

North America, USA, Pennsylvania, ca. 19th century CE. A large, handsome pine wood chest, painted dark brown, with a motif of two pheasant-like birds, each holding a tulip, and surrounded by brightly colored symbols painted in colorful circles. The lid has a large floral motif on its surface. Metal hinges, handles, and a lock complete the chest, which is unpainted on its interior. This chest is from a tradition of dower chests, also known as hope chests or blanket chests, that young women would use to store their prized possessions as they moved to their husbands' homes. This example had wheels mounted on its base at some point during the 20th century, making it much easier to move. Size: 22.65" L x 23" W x 24.25" H (57.5 cm x 58.4 cm x 61.6 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
