Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden horse figure with long legs, a stocky body, a saddle seat back and hand grip, and a tuft of fur constituting the tail. A larger patch of hair is pinned to the front of the chest. The raised head exhibits ovoid eyes, a thick snout, petite ears, and iron nails bent through the mouth for the bridle bit. Traces of white, brown, and red pigmentation are visible across the equine sculpture and suggests that it was painted with vibrant colors at one time. Size: 20.75" L x 20.25" H (52.7 cm x 51.4 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
