Native American, Southwest, Zuni, ca. 19th century CE. An adorable and abstract greenstone carving of a zoomorph resembling a recumbent fox. Laying atop 4 tucked legs, the animal presents a slightly arched back, a bushy, raised tail, and a long, pointed snout capped by ovoid ears. His minimalist visage shows only drilled eyes and a slightly open mouth. Note how the natural mottled hues of mint green, olivine, and mocha add depth to the smooth surface. In Zuni cosmology and those of neighboring tribes, each fetish is believed to have inherent powers or qualities that may aid the owner. The fox was believed to represent protection and the ability to blend in or become camouflaged with ones surroundings. He may grant powers of speed, observation, and cleverness. Size: 2.5" L x 0.6" W x 0.9" H (6.4 cm x 1.5 cm x 2.3 cm)
