Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North Africa, Morocco, Berber culture, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. This is a massive and beautiful hand-woven wool textile carpet or tent hanging, made by Berber woman in a flat weave with colorful geometric and discontinuous weft patterning (brocade). The threads are dyed in warm tones of peach-pink, orange, beige, red, yellow, brown, and black hues that form horizontal registers of linear and triangular forms. The loose ends are worked into a tassel and add nice texture to the ends of the piece. The Berbers were nomadic people of Arab descent that lived throughout Morocco. Weaving and producing textiles for various everyday use and trade were a large part of a Berber women's life, the patterns were a combination of Islamic symbols and other African cultures with their own designs to create symbolic meaning. This large panel is a vibrant and a substantial piece that could have easily covered the whole floor of a room or acted as a wall divider. Size: 148" L x 65" W (375.9 cm x 165.1 cm)
