Description:

North America, Mexico, ca. early 19th century CE. A fascinating wooden drum from the Doliente de Hidalgo, the rebel group in the Mexican War of Independence that sought revenge for the murder of the priest Miguel Hidalgo in 1811. The skin surfaces used to produce sound - the batter head and snare head - are both painted with important Mexican motifs. One side features the classic symbol of the eagle perched atop the cactus eating the snake, recalling the legend of the founding of Tenochtitlan, and, subsequently, Mexico City. The other is painted with a cross bearing a stylized skull at its center and the words, "El Doliente de Hidalgo de a 12". This symbol graced flags, drums, and other items used by the rebels, and is still used today to represent Mexican independence. The rest of the drum is constructed from wooden slats with two bands of black and white fur - possibly from a horse or donkey - as well as thin leather straps that hold the entire instrument together. Size: 15" W x 8.6" H (38.1 cm x 21.8 cm)
