Description:

Mexico, ca. 1800 CE. An interesting antique painting on tin depicting St. Camillus, the "Red Cross Saint." Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. Camillus was the founder of the Brothers of Saint John of God, or Ministers of the Sick, an order which strove to care for the physically as well as spiritually ill. This example shows Camillus in the traditional way, as he administers last rites to a dying man. His assistants kneel on either side of the deathbed, while the dying man upholds a crucifix. As Camillus ministers, a devil peers in at the window and faint remains of another devil are at his shoulder. At the head of the bed is a small angel, holding what appears to be a Gospel. 13-3/4" x 10"

  • Condition: Areas of loss, warping, and rust, as is typical with antique tin.
