Description:

Mexico, ca. 1800 CE. A colorful antique painting on tin depicting San Jose. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This example shows St. Joseph in his role as the ideal father, gently cradling the Christ Child in his arms. He is dressed in the typical green and yellow robes, and he holds a flowering staff. Jesus clutches a tiny crucifix in his right hand, and rays of light emanate from the heads of both. 14" x 10"

  • Condition: Areas of loss, warping, and rust, as is typical with antique tin.
