Description:

North America, Mexico, early Apache-Mexico Wars period, ca. 1831 to 1860 CE. A forged-iron Mexican cavalry sword known as a "wristbreaker" due to its wide and thick spine. The openwork brass hand guard has curving tendrils that arch between the knob-shaped pommel and blade base, and the wooden handle is studded with dozens of brass tacks. The blade exhibits a gently curved profile and features a thick spine, a shallow fuller that runs almost the entire length, a sharpened edge, and a pointed tip. Accompanying the blade is an iron sheath with a pair of strap loops and a projecting rim along the bottom. Size (w/ sheath): 4.125" W x 40.875" H (10.5 cm x 103.8 cm); (length of blade): 34" L (86.4 cm).

  • Condition: Losses to areas of sheath and small areas of handle. One strap loop on sheath adhered to sheath body. Bending to overall form of blade, with pitting to blade and sheath, with abrasions to pommel, hand guard, blade, and sheath, and light encrustations. Nice patina throughout.
