Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely ceramic and vibrantly glazed budded crucifix on an integral pedestal. The tiered pedestal is adorned with scrolling volutes with a blue, umber, and white glaze. The blue and umber-orange colors have blended into each other creating a green hue where the two colors meet. The base arm has a raised motif of an open flower head in green and yellow. A green stalk runs up to a large flower at the cross center, with stalks extending along the other three arms with smaller flowers at the tips. Four light green petal shaped ridges are set in the corners of the intersecting arms, forming a circular halo shape. The verso of the cross is not glazed. Crosses with the trefoil terminals on the arms are often called “budded crosses” which represents renewal and growing of faith, especially fitting for this piece, given the floral motifs! Size: 10" L x 3" W x 16" H (25.4 cm x 7.6 cm x 40.6 cm)
