Description:

French Polynesia, Marquesas Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A tall, hand-carved wooden figure representative of a deceased ancestor. The statue has a rotund body which sports a pair of nubbin-shaped legs, lengthy arms folded over its abdomen, and a broad chest leading upwards to rolling shoulders. The head is slightly larger than the body, held aloft by a tapered neck line, and exhibits almond-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, full lips that are slightly parted, slender cheeks, and a puffy brow. The top of the head is angled downwards and slopes towards a planar verso. This figure would have been adorned in brightly-colored pigmentation at one point as indicated by remains of red, brown, and blue pigments. Custom museum-quality display stand included.
