Description:

Southeast Asia, Philippines, Luzon region, Ifugao people, ca. late 19th century CE. A very rare find - a shaman's bowl, hewn from a rough piece of wood, with clear carving marks on the interior of the bowl. At either end, forming handles, are two anthropomorphic heads, their faces upturned, as if looking at the viewer. Each has deep eyes and a line forming the mouth below a relatively flat nose. Bowls like this one were used during ritual sacrifices. Size: 18.25" L x 7" W x 6.5" H (46.4 cm x 17.8 cm x 16.5 cm); 10.5" H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.
