Description:

East Asia, Korea, Joseon Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A delightful pair of blue-on-white porcelain water droppers. The first is ring shaped, with pretty floral motifs painted on its rounded upper surface and a tiny spout projecting at one end. The other is in the form of a yong, a Korean dragon, with the spout located between its parted lips. Yong were believed to be powerful, wise creatures. Scholars during the Joseon Dynasty used inkstones to grind ink sticks, which they would wet before the grinding process to make ink flow more readily. In the 19th century, fancifully shaped water droppers like these became fashionable. Size of largest (Yong): 4.15" W x 2.1" H (10.5 cm x 5.3 cm)
