Description:

Engraved by John C. McRae (American, active 1850 to 1880) after Charles Lucy's (British, 1814-1873) painting entitled "The Departure of the Pilgrim Fathers for America A.D. 1620", published by Caldwell & Co. 82 Cedar St. New York, and dating to 1847, this very large engraving depicts the pilgrims prior to their maritime voyage to Plymouth Rock. The scene is replete with endearing human interactions between couples and loved ones prior to the difficult journey. The central figure appears to be engaged in prayer with hands reaching up toward the heavens and an open holy book in front of his left bended knee. This historic voyage would take 66 days, and the pilgrims suffered sea sickness, rough seas, and treacherous Atlantic storms. Size: mage 29.375" W x 20.75" H (74.6 cm x 52.7 cm); 37.75" W x 29.75" H (95.9 cm x 75.6 cm) framed
