Description:

School of Paul Delaroche (French, 1797-1856), oil on wood, ca. 1830s. Signed "D' Paul Delaroche" on lower right. Some have identified the subject of this portrait as the artist Paul Delaroche; however, we actually believe it is a portrait of a Camoldine monk, given comparable examples by Delaroche. Size: 7" L x 6.5" W (17.8 cm x 16.5 cm), framed 9" L x 9" W (22.9 cm x 22.9 cm)

Paul Delaroche was a 19th century French artist whose work received even more international acclaim than that by Ingre and Delacroix during his lifetime. Delaroche specialized in history paintings, religious subjects, and portraits. Delaroche was highly revered for his fine line technique.
