Description:

Japan, 19th Century CE. Ferocious looking antique helmet with fierce-looking rivets across the piece and original cloth fasteners to hold the helmet in place. Samurai warriors often fought hand-to-hand on the battlefield, and it was common practice for the winner to decapitate the head of his opponent and carry it as a trophy. This was so common that the Samurai warrior would burn incense in his helmet before battle to prevent stench if he was decapitated. This particular style of helmet was developed to prevent this from happening. The helmet is built of riveted pieces of iron and has heavy neck protection (Shikoro). 11-1/2"D x 12-1/2"W x 7-1/2"H, original cotton cording once covered in silk, now mostly worn away. Provenance: Ex-M. Carini collection, CA; ex-private California collectionAuthenticity GuaranteedThe starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.

  • Condition: Some peeling of outer material across the helmet, otherwise excellent
