China, Spring and Autumn Period, ca. 771-476 BCEA very fine and important Chinese he (wine cup) from the Spring & Autumn Period. This beautiful piece is published in Allen's Authentication of Ancient Chinese Bronzes by Anthony J. Allen. According to Allen, this piece was found together with a yi (wine jug) and was probably used in ritual toasting to the ancestors. The cup is relatively large, with a shallow, oval shape and two round handles on either side. The piece has glutinous clay adhesions typical of these burial artifacts. Measures approximately 6" long, 6 1/2" wide (with handles), 2-1/2" high. Provenance: ex- Connell collection, published in Allen's Authentication of Ancient Chinese Bronzes by Anthony J.
