Japan, Edo to Meiji Period, ca. 1850 to 1900 CE. A very rare and finely carved netsuke in deep orange amber. Single piece carved in the form of a Nue (Japanese Chimera) which is comprised of many animals including human, lion and snake. Old collection number on base. Size: 1.875" L x 1.5" H (4.8 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: from the Paul and Louise Bernheimer collection of Japanese Edo and Meiji Period Netsukes, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, Ca. Acquired before 1980 and all made at least 75 years before the 1970 ivory ban.
