Description:

Southeast Asia, Phillipines, ca. 19th century CE. A beautifully hand-carved wooden sculpture depicting a haloed Jesus with a tranquil and finely rendered visage delineated with elegant facial features, an incised mustache and beard, and a wavy long coiffure that cascades down his back. Dressed in billowing robes, he stands upon an integral pedestal. Though his left hand is missing, he most likely held a gospel in that hand. The figure and pedestal were magnificently carved from a single piece of wood by a highly skilled artisan. Areas of russet and white pigment remain on the surface. A wondrous religious statue of rich symbolism and remarkable artistry and technique. Size: 10.25" W x 24.25" H (26 cm x 61.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Peter Arnovick collection
