East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely portable wooden storage box known as a tansu with a set of 3 drawers with copper handles. The lacquered black surface is decorated with gilt Japanese characters and a set of eyes painted on the side. The 3 drawers pull out easily, the bottom compartment has a lock plate and keyhole. Tansu were used in homes as well as shops for storage of valuables, a pair of handles to the sides would have helped transport this box. Size: 11.5" L x 7.25" W x 13.25" H (29.2 cm x 18.4 cm x 33.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Remains of old paper labels on drawers. Some fading to gilt, but painted characters on side are discernable. Abrasions and chips to wood. Missing handles on the sides. Drawers open easily.
