Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine pair of gilt copper sake ewers used for serving sake at a banquet or wedding ceremony. Both displaying planar bases, cylindrical bodies, broad, annular rims, and incised and applied floral and vegetal motifs on their exteriors. Known as a naga-e choshi, the larger kettle presents an elongated handle and 2 tapered spouts. Alternatively, the other ewer is called a hisage and features only 1 spout as well as a high-arching, hinged handle. The hisage is used to transfer sake from the barrel to the naga-e choshi, acting as a type of decanter. Once filled, the naga-e choshi then serves sake to the guests with only 1 spout being used for small gatherings and both for larger celebrations. Both are incised with elaborate and intricate detail - a fine testament to the workmanship of the artist! Size: 19.9" L x 11.5" W x 5.2" H (50.5 cm x 29.2 cm x 13.2 cm)
