Description:

Native American, Western United States, Central California, Yokut tribe, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a large hand-woven sedge root cooking basket, that incorporates naturally red and black fibers to create a bold geometric pattern. The basket is made with the coiling technique and has a flared conical shape, a flat, stable bottom, and a broad rim. The motifs consist of 4 symmetrical and evenly spaced vertical black and red triangular and stepped bands - the black is from bracken fern root, and the red from redbud shoots. These baskets were used for cooking acorn-meal by placing red hot stones inside the basket and occasionally moving the stones so the fibers would not scorch. The incredibly tight weave held in most moisture, attesting to the skill of the artisans. Size: 14" Diameter x 7" H (35.6 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
